Connect Allied Health provides adult autism diagnostic assessments in Adelaide. Our assessments are conducted by a psychologist and a speech pathologist working together, using a dual clinician model that meets South Australian diagnostic requirements.
We take a neurodiversity-affirming approach. Our goal is not to define what is “wrong,” but to build a clear picture of how you experience the world, so you can access the right understanding and support.
Assessments are available at our Norwood, Modbury, and Berri clinics.

Why Adults Seek an Autism Assessment
Many adults pursue an autism assessment after years of wondering why certain experiences feel different or more challenging than expected. Some people have self-identified and are seeking formal confirmation, while others are encouraged by a partner, family member, or health professional.
Common reasons adults seek an assessment include:
- Longstanding differences in social communication, relationships, or sensory processing that have not been fully explained
- A history of anxiety, depression, or burnout that has not responded as expected to standard approaches
- Difficulty with workplace expectations, executive functioning, or managing daily routines
- A child or family member has recently been diagnosed and traits feel familiar
- Wanting clarity, self-understanding, or exploring access to appropriate supports (including, where applicable, the NDIS)
There is no “right” reason to seek an assessment. If you are questioning whether autism may be part of your experience, that can be a valid starting point for discussion.

What the Assessment Involves
In Australia, autism diagnosis typically involves input from more than one qualified professional. At Connect Allied Health, your assessment is conducted by both a psychologist and a speech pathologist working together in a dual clinician model.
The process is guided by the DSM-5-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision), a widely used diagnostic framework in Australia.

What the Diagnostic Report Covers
Your report will include:
- A summary of your developmental and personal history
- Clinical observations from the face-to-face session
- Results of standardised assessment tools
- A clear diagnostic outcome, with clinical reasoning
- Recommendations for support, therapy, or further assessment where relevant
The report can be shared with your GP, psychologist, NDIS planner, or other professionals involved in your care, with your consent.

How Autism Can Present in Adults
Autism presents differently from person to person. In adults, traits may look different from descriptions commonly associated with children. Many adults develop ways to adapt or “mask” their differences over time, which can sometimes make recognition more complex.
Some common features in adults include:
- Differences in social communication, such as finding small talk draining, misreading social cues, or preferring direct communication
- Strong, focused interests or deep knowledge in specific areas
- Sensory sensitivities, such as discomfort with certain sounds, textures, lighting, or crowded spaces
- Preference for routine and difficulty adjusting when plans change unexpectedly
- Fatigue or burnout from sustained social or sensory demands
These experiences are not deficits. They are part of how autistic people interact with the world. A diagnostic assessment helps put these experiences in context.
Where Autism Assessments Take Place
Adult autism assessments are conducted at our Norwood, Modbury and Berri clinics. The clinic setting allows our clinicians to complete the structured observation and interview components in a consistent environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the adult autism assessment take?
The face-to-face session is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Report writing takes around 6 hours. Most people receive their report and feedback within a few weeks of the session.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to book. However, a GP or paediatrician referral may be needed to access Medicare rebates. You are welcome to contact us directly to discuss your situation.
What happens if I receive a diagnosis?
Your clinician will walk you through the findings and what they mean for you. The report will include recommendations for support, and our team can help you understand options including therapy, NDIS access, and workplace adjustments.
What if autism is not identified?
If the assessment does not result in an autism diagnosis, you will still receive a full report with clinical observations and recommendations. Your clinicians may suggest other areas worth exploring, and can refer you to appropriate professionals within or outside our practice.
How is this different from a child assessment?
Adult assessments account for the fact that many adults have learned to mask or adapt over time. Our clinicians are experienced in recognising how autism presents in adulthood, including in people who were not identified as children.
